Dirtbags Split Saturday Doubleheader with Cal Poly

The Dirtbags fell 7-5 in the first game, but responded with a 2-1 victory in game two.
Game one was a pitchers' dual through the first three innings as neither team could get anything going. Cal Poly put an end to that pushing a run across in the fourth before putting up a four-spot against Luis Ramirez in the fifth.
Ramirez had his worst start of the season going five innings allowing five earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six. It snaps a streak of six consecutive quality starts he had going back to last year.
Jake Rons took over in the sixth and the Mustangs greeted him with a pair of runs to make it a 7-0 ballgame.
That was plenty of run support for Cal Poly starter Andrew Alvarez who tossed seven shutout innings allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out three.
The Dirtbags did not go down without a fight though. After back-to-back singles led off the inning, an RBI groundout from Jesse Lopez ended the shutout. Aidan Malm followed that up with a double down the left field line to plate another.
A pair of walks would load the bases and force Cal Poly to make a pitching change. The new arm was greeted by a Connor Kokx two-RBI single. With the bases loaded again, the Mustangs brought in their third pitcher of the inning. Jonathon Long would work a walk to bring in the fifth run of the game before a strikeout ended the rally.
Looking to bounce back from the 7-5 game one loss, the Dirtbags handed the ball to Alfredo Ruiz for game two.
Ruiz, coming off a bad start last weekend at UCSD, went on to throw seven innings of shutout ball, scattering two hits and three walks while striking out seven.
Long Beach State pushed the first run across on a Chris Jimenez RBI groundout in the bottom half of the third.
Ruiz cruised through the first six innings, but got into some trouble in the seventh after an error, passed ball, and wild pitch put a runner on third with only one out. The left-hander would pick up a strikeout for out number two before surrendering a walk to put runners on the corner.
The sophomore handled the pressure with ease though picking up his seventh strikeout of the game to get out of the jam.
Aidan Malm would lead off the bottom half of the seventh in a pinch hit situation and give the Dirtbags a much needed insurance run launching his first home run of the season to make it 2-0.
Devereaux Harrison took over in relief in the eighth inning and worked a quiet one-two-three frame, but would face some drama in the ninth.
Facing the heart of the Cal Poly order, All-American Brooks Lee led the inning off with a double to left center. Matt Lopez would follow up with a double of his own to make it one-run game.
After a deep flyout moved the runner to third, Chase Luttrell would make a diving catch on a line drive that was clocked at 106mph off the bat to preserve the Dirtbag lead. Harrison would go on to blow a fastball by the final Mustang hitter and secure his fifth save of the season.
Connor Kokx reached base in both games, extending his on-base streak to 16-straight games.
The Dirtbags will look to take the series from the Mustangs tomorrow afternoon at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field. First pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
