Beach Women’s Basketball Battles, But Falls in the Final Seconds to Cal Poly, 61-60

Long Beach State had three players score in double-figures in the nail-biter

LAS VEGAS – For the second time this season, Long Beach State dropped a last-second contest to Cal Poly in heartbreaking fashion. The No. 3 seed Beach lost, 61-60, to the No. 6 seed Mustangs on Wednesday night in the Big West Conference Tournament Quarterfinals.
The Beach finish the 2020-21 season with a 12-9 record, while the Mustangs (13-10) advance to the Semifinals on Friday to face No. 2 seed UC Irvine.
The heartbreaking loss made for a nail-biter of a game. Long Beach State and Cal Poly battled each other through eight ties and 13 lead changes, and neither team led the other by more than eight points.
The evenly matched contest saw the Beach shoot 35.7 percent from the field, while the Mustangs shot 35.8 percent. The difference seemed to be made on rebounds as Cal Poly outrebounded LBSU 42-25. However, key missed opportunities in the final minutes of the game proved costly to the Beach.
Trailing 55-53 with 3:04 remaining, Kristyna Jeskeova completed the three-point play to give LBSU a 56-55 edge with 1:50 left to play. The Beach led by three (60-57) with less than a minute on the clock. But Maddie Willett made both free throws to make it a one-point game (60-59) with just 33.0 seconds to go.
The Beach missed a pair of key free throws with just seven ticks left, which gave Cal Poly the opportunity to win the game. As the clock expired, Willett got herself into the paint and made the game-winning layup.
The Beach played a hard-fought contest as they were led by Naomi Hunt (14 points), Justina King (13 points), and Imani Lacy (11 points). Lacy had a breakout second quarter in which she scored 10 of her 11 points. Additionally, the junior forward finished with five rebounds and one block.
In addition to her 13-point performance, King contributed four boards, four assists, and three steals.
Jeskeova led the Beach with seven rebounds, while Ma'Qhi Berry collected nine points, three boards, three assists, two steals, and one block.
Cal Poly's Sierra Campisano registered a double-double with 30 points and 12 rebounds. Abbey Ellis notched a double-double for the Mustangs as well as she concluded the game with 12 points and 10 boards. She also added five assists and two steals. Willett finished the game with 10 points.
