Junior Joel Murray led four LBSU players in double-figures against the Lions.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State battled to a seven-point first half lead behind a strong defensive effort, but Loyola Marymount was able to come back in the second half to steal a 77-74 win against the Beach on Saturday.
Long Beach State (2-6) held Loyola Marymount (5-3) to just 35.5% shooting in the first half and just 42.1 percent overall on the night in an improved defensive effort that helped stake the lead against the Lions.
Down five at 22-17, a Joel Murray 3-pointer sparked a Long Beach State run and the Beach evened the score at 27-27 before racing away from LMU, opening up a 35-30 lead before a putback dunk from Eddie Scott in the closing seconds of the half put the Beach on top 37-30.
Long Beach State would lead by as many as nine in the second half, extending the lead on a massive dunk from Jordan Roberts on a great touch pass on a fast break from Joe Hampton. Incidental contact after the play led to a technical, however, and that sparked an LMU rally that saw the Lions retake the lead and eventually push out to a 10-point lead at 60-50.
The Beach wasn't set to give up though. Murray made two foul shots and a Drew Cobb steal on the inbounds led to a Colin Slater 3-point play, as the Beach cut the lead in half in just three seconds of game time. The Beach would eventually pull even at 64 with just under five minutes remaining on a Roberts 3-point play. Tied at 66, the Lions would take the lead on a Dameane Douglas basket, and then took a two-possession lead at 73-69 with just over a minute to play. LMU then hit all four free throws down the stretch to negate a Cobb three that brought the Beach back within one basket in the final seconds.
Murray finished with 19 points to lead the Beach in scoring, while Colin Slater added 14. Roberts neared a double-double with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Jadon Jones hit three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points.
Long Beach State will remain in Long Beach State their next game, hosting Bethesda at 7 p.m. on Wednesday inside the Walter Pyramid on ESPN+.
