Garrett Zaan scores fives goals as the BEach clinches first 20-win season since 2014.
Long Beach, Calif. — Garrett Zaan scored five goals as the Beach defeated No. 12 UC Irvine, 12-5 Saturday afternoon at Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center.
The victory clinched an undefeated conference run for No. 5 Long Beach State after clinching the regular season title last week.
It was the first time since 1988 that the Beach went undefeated in conference play and the first time LBSU has won 20 games in a season since 2014.
Zaan got the Beach on the board first as LBSU (20-5, 5-0) led wire-to-wire against the Anteaters.
The Beach took a 3-1 lead after the first quarter and didn't look back as they continued to add to their lead.
Along with Zaan's five goals, freshman Alika Naone scored three goals as the Beach held the Anteaters offense in check.
Andrej Bosanac had six saves in the cage before Liam Ward took over in the fourth quarter and recorded two saves.
The Beach will now prepare for the GCC Tournament that will be hosted by UC Irvine next weekend.
After clinching the No. 1 seed, the Beach will play Saturday night against the winner of San Jose State and Pepperdine.
Before the contest, Long Beach State honored senior Felipe Carsalade.
