Phillips Earns All-Big West, Beach Compete at Big West Championships

The men’s team finished fifth overall while the women finished sixth.
DAVIS, Calif. – The Long Beach State cross country team had their best showing at the Big West Conference Championships in several years on Friday morning. Michael Phillips led the team, earning the third All-Big West selection under Coach Shawn Winget's tenure.
The men's fifth place finish overall is the best since 2018 while the women's sixth place is the best since 2017.

Phillips led the way for the men posting a time of 24:12.7 and crossing the line seventh overall. It marks a new personal best for the junior transfer and ranks sixth all-time in program history. It is also the fastest time in the championships by a Long Beach State athlete since 2011.
Raymon Ornelas crossed the line second for the Beach with a time of 24:23.2 in eleventh. Ricky Villa finished with a time of 24:54.3 as the third Beach finisher.
Alex Kalmar and Antonio Munoz both set new personal bests crossing the line at 25:04.6 and 25:10.2, respectively. Jacob Korgan was the final Beach runner across, posting a time of 25:26.9.
The 115 points for the men's team in the Big West Championships is the best since they scored 109 in 2015.
On the women's side, Ryley Fick crossed the line first for the black and gold. She finished 13th with a time of 21:04.6 just three-tenths of a second off of her lifetime-best.
Allie Scimia and Bronwyn Bunnell were the next two Beach runners to cross, finishing two seconds apart at 22:09.6 and 22:11.2, respectively.
Anitha Graves (22:29.4), Tiana Prince (22:36.6), Brieanna Tafoya (23:12.4), and Yajaira Calderon (24:11.7) rounded out the scoring for Long Beach State.
The 157 total points by the women's team is the best finish in the conference championships since they posted 150 points in 2017.
Long Beach State will be in action on November 12 for the NCAA West Regionals. The meet will be hosted by Sacramento State at the Haggin Oaks Golf Complex.
