Long Beach State Women’s Volleyball Falls in Straight Sets at Hawaii

Erykah Lovett hit .438 in the contest to go along with 15 kills and eight digs

HONOLULU – Long Beach State started out strong, pushing Hawaii to overtime in the first set, but was unable to come up with the win as the Beach dropped a 3-0 [24-26, 16-25, 21-25] contest to the Rainbow Wahine on Friday night inside the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Beach (7-8, 1-3 Big West) played the host Rainbow Wahine (6-5, 3-0 Big West) tough in an evenly matched showing that saw Hawaii lead LBSU, slightly, in each statistical category. The Wahine held the edge in kills (47-41), assists (47-40), aces (3-1), digs (46-41), and blocks (6.0-5.0).
Freshman outside hitter Erykah Lovett led the way for Long Beach State as she concluded the match with 15 kills on a .438 attack percentage, while adding eight digs, one assist, and one blocks. Junior outside hitter Kashauna Williams finished the contest with 14 kills, while Tia Chavira narrowly missed a double-double with 29 assists, nine digs, four blocks, and three kills on a .333 attack percentage. Joining Chavira was a team-leading four blocks at the net was freshman Kameron Bacon.
Sophomore libero Nicole Hoff was solid defensively as she picked up nine digs in the back row to lead the defensive specialist squad of Dylan Dela Cruz (five digs) and Jenna Giambi (three digs).
Long Beach State took an early 3-1 lead over Hawaii to star the match on back-to-back kills from Williams. The Beach extended their lead to five (10-5) on a block assist by Lovett and Bacon forcing a UH timeout. From their, the Beach took a 22-19 advantage over the Wahine, but three-straight points from Hawaii evened the score at 23-all as LBSU called for a break in action. Following the timeout, Hawaii seemed to find their groove as the Wahine came from behind to defeat the Beach, 26-24, in the first set.
After LBSU opened the second set with a 2-0 lead, the Rainbow Wahine used a 7-1 run to jump out to a 7-3 advantage. From their, the Wahine strung together three-straight points on several occasions to hold a steady lead over the Beach before cruising to a 25-16 victory.
Down 2-0, the Beach quickly fell behind the Wahine in the third set, 7-4. However, Long Beach State refused to quit as the Beach would battle back and even the score at 9-9 on a kill from Miranda Canez. From there, the conference foes traded points until Hawaii earned a 14-12 lead on a kill and block from Braelyn Akana and Riley Wagoner, respectively. Hawaii led the rest of the way, despite the Beach making it a one-point game (20-19) on a kill from Lovett. The Wahine would go on a 4-0 run to push it to match point (24-19), before completing the sweep, 25-21.
The Wahine were led by Brooke Van Sickle's 15 kills and nine digs on a .324 clip. Wagoner also reached double-figures with 11 kills, while hitting .409, and adding seven digs. Skyler Williams led all hitters with a .467 attack percentage (8-1-15), whileKate Lang finished the match with a double-double (37 assists, 11 digs).
Long Beach State will return to action on Friday, Oct. 8 against UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m. in Santa Barbara, Calif. The contest will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
