SANTA BARBARA, Calif. –
Long Beach State started off strong against UC Santa Barbara, but ultimately fell in three sets [24-26, 19-25, 19-25] on Friday night at the Thunderdome.

The Beach (7-9, 1-4 Big West) hit .357 in the first set, but finished the match hitting .176 as the Gauchos (9-8, 5-0 Big West) hit .230.

Long Beach State was led offensively by Katie Kennedy who led all scorers with 13 kills on a .429 attack percentage. Joining Kennedy in double-digits was Erykah Lovett who tallied 11 kills on a .320 clip. Lovett also added four digs and an ace.

Sophomore setter Tia Chavira distributed 30 assists to go along with five digs and three blocks, while Dylan Dela Cruz logged nine digs in the back row for the Beach.

LBSU used a 7-0 run, highlighted by back-to-back aces from Dela Cruz to take a 9-6 lead in the first set. However, UC Santa Barbara would come back to even the score at 18-all after knocking down three-straight points. The Gauchos went on another scoring run (4-0) to take a 22-19 lead, but the Beach would not quit. Long Beach State tied things up a 22-all, then 24-all on a kill from Kennedy. With the game knotted at 24-24, UCSB managed to pull ahead and win 26-24 despite being out-hit .357 - .176 by the Beach.

In similar fashion to the first set, the second saw the conference foes use small runs to stay close early. Back-to-back kills from Lovett made it a one-point game (16-15) which gave the Beach the momentum it needed to jump out in front 18-17 after going on a 6-1 run. With things looking to go Long Beach State's way, UC Santa Barbara found its groove and closed the set on a 7-1 run as the Gauchos defeated the Beach, 25-19.

The third set started close after the Beach and the Gauchos once again exchanged points until UC Santa Barbara strung together four-straight points to go up 14-10, forcing a Long Beach State timeout. The Gauchos extended their lead to five (17-12) as LBSU utilized another timeout. From there, the game seemed to stay in UCSB's favor as the Gauchos would cruise a 25-19 win over LBSU.

UCSB was led by Tallulah Froley (nine kills) and Tasia Farmer (eight kills), while Mehana Ma'a and Grace Kloss each dished out 18 assists. Macall Peed added nine digs, while Rowan Ennis added four blocks.

Long Beach State looks to get back on the winning track on Saturday, Oct. 9 when the Beach take on CSUN at the Matadome at 7 p.m. The contest will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
