Claremont, Calif. — The Long Beach State men's water polo team had a record-setting day at the Gary Troyer Tournament on Saturday.Â
Opening tournament play against Fresno Pacific, the Beach defeated the Sunbirds 36-5, setting a new record for goals scored in a contest - breaking the previous mark of 24 set in 1998 against Occidental.
The victory kick-started the day as the Beach outscored opponents 66-13 to go unbeaten.
In their midday game, the Beach (13-4) defeated Redlands 18-2 in a solid defensive performance.Â
Frank Hulick led the Beach with four goals and ten Beach athletes found the back of the cage.Â
The Beach defense was solid when Redlands went on power plays, shutting down the Bulldogs as they went 1-for-13 on 6-on-5 opportunities.Â
To wrap up tournament play, the Beach overcame a 3-0 deficit in the first period to defeat No. 16 Fordham, 12-6.Â
The Beach defense clamped down, holding the Rams to two goals over the last three periods.Â
In a balanced attack, Theodoros Pateros scored three goals and Andrej Bosanac had a season-high 13 saves.Â
The Beach will now prepare for a trip to San Diego when they take on UC San Diego on Wednesday.Â
