Long Beach State's Rafael Real Vergara scores four goals as the Beach defeats the Spartans.
Long Beach, Calif. — After almost a month since Long Beach State was at Ken Lindgren Aquaitcs Center, the Beach defeated No. 10 San Jose State 15-6 on Saturday to move to 2-0 in Golden Coast Conference play.
Rafael Real Vergara scored four goals as the Beach overcame a slow started to pull away for the victory.
In the first period, Theodoros Pateros score his first of three goals to give the Beach a 1-0 lead 40 seconds into the contest.
Vergara followed with his own goal as LBSU (16-4, 2-0 GCC) took a 2-0 lead after the first period.
The Beach defense stifled the Spartans attack and held them scoreless as the Long Beach State was able to expand its lead to 6-1 at halftime.
In the third period, the Spartans scored the first goal, but the Beach responded with goals from Alika Naone and Evan Cain to take an 8-3 lead.
The Beach opened the game up in the fourth outscoring SJSU 6-2 on their way to the victory.
Along with Pateros, Evan Cain also scored three goals for the Beach in a well-balanced win.
Naone score two goals, and Andrej Bosanac has 12 saves in the cage.
In an exhibition match, the Beach defeated Golden West College following the conclusion of their contest with the Spartans.
The Beach will be back at Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center on Sunday to take on No. 3 USC.
Following their contest with USC, the Beach will have an exhibition against Long Beach City College before wrapping the day with an Alumni Game.
