Rafael Real Vergara scores three goals and Alika Naone and Garrett Zaan scored twice.
Long Beach, Calif. — In a battle of top five teams, No. 5 Long Beach State fell to No. 3 USC 13-9 Sunday afternoon at Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center.
In the first quarter it was a defensive battle as both defenses stifled each other's offensive attack.
Theodoros Pateros broke the scoreless game to give the Beach an early 1-0 lead, but USC's Luka Brnetic tied the game shortly after to make it a 1-1 tie after the first period.
Rafael Real Vergara put the Beach up 2-1 after a penalty shot but the Trojans (13-1) quickly responded to tie the game.
USC went on a 4-0 run to take a 5-2 lead with 2:46 left in the first half. Aaron Arias stopped USC's run when he found the back of the cage with 1:07 left in the half.
But, Jake Erhardt scored less than 25 second later on a power play.
At halftime the Beach (15-5) trailed 6-3.
After the Trojans took a 7-3 lead Vergara once again scored and Alika Naone got in on the action to cut the deficit to 7-5.
That was the closest the Beach would get as the Trojans when on a 5-2 lead to take a 12-7 led midway through the fourth quarter.
Long Beach State's Vergara scored three goals – with his third goal of the day being his 100th goal of his career.
Naone and Garrett Zaan each score twice.
The Beach will be back in action on Oct. 28th when they travel to Pacific for a GCC contest.
