Slow Start Hampers Long Beach State in 66-54 Setback at CSUN

King, Hardy lead the scoring effort with 14 and 13 points, respectively

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Long Beach State got off to a slow start, shooting just 22.2 percent in the first half, and was unable to recover as the Beach dropped a 66-54 contest to CSUN at the Matadome on Thursday night.
The Beach (11-15, 6-7 Big West) trailed by as many as 15 in the game and cut the Matadors' (11-16, 6-7 Big West) lead down to five in the fourth quarter, but ultimately fell by 12. Long Beach State has now dropped its last three contests.
Sophomores Justina King and Jasmine Hardy led the offensive effort for the Beach with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Hardy added four rebounds, while King contributed three boards, five assists, and two steals.
Lauren Green grabbed a team-high five rebounds to go along with six points. Meanwhile Ma'Qhi Berry registered five assists, four points, three assists and two boards.
The Beach were held to single digits in both the first and second quarter, muster just eight and nine points in each frame. CSUN shot 46.4 percent in the first half and held a 31-17 lead over Long Beach State at halftime.
Things started clicking for Long Beach State in the second half as the Beach outscored the Matadors 19-14 in the third quarter. In that frame, CSUN held a 15-point lead (39-24) with 3:26 left to play, but LBSU whittled that down to seven (43-36) with just 26 seconds on the clock, before heading into the fourth quarter down 45-36.
The fourth quarter saw the Beach shoot 42.9 percent from the field as LBSU used back-to-back threes from King and Cyndee Kinslow to cut the Matadors' lead down to five (49-44). However, CSUN extended its lead back up to double-digits (57-46) before closing out the game with a 12-point advantage (66-54).
CSUN had four double-figure scorers led by Meghann Henderson's 18-point performance. De'Jionae Calloway added 13 points to go along with 12 rebounds for a double-double, while Jordyn Jackson posted 12 points, and Deja Williams recorded 11.
Long Beach State looks to get back on the winning track when it travels to UC Santa Barbara for a Saturday, Feb. 29 match up with the Gauchos. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m. in the Thunderdome.
