Long Beach State Falls at UC Santa Barbara, 55-47

King, Berry play all 40-minutes of action and score 15 and 10 points, respectively
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Long Beach State women's basketball team dropped their fourth-straight contest on Saturday at The Thunderdome to UC Santa Barbara as the Gauchos took the game 55-47.
UCSB (13-15, 8-7 Big West) used a 9-0 lead in the first quarter to jump out in front 9-3 and led the rest of the way. LBSU (11-16, 6-8 Big West) heated up in the fourth quarter as the Beach outscored the Gauchos 20-10 and did not allow a field goal, but were unable to close the gap.
Justina King led the Beach with 15 points, three assists, two rebounds, and a pair of steals, while Ma'Qhi Berry added 10 points to go along with two boards, one assist, and one steal. Meanwhile Cydnee Kinslow led the Beach on boards with six rebounds.
The first quarter was the difference maker as the Gauchos shot 58.8 percent from the field, connecting on 10-of-17 attempts and racking up 24 points. The Beach, meanwhile, struggled offensively as LBSU was held to just 21.4 percent shooting (3-for-14) as the Beach trailed 24-8 heading into the second quarter.
The defensive second quarter saw both teams held to single digits in the frame as LBSU outscored UCSB 9-8 to cut the Gauchos lead down to 15 (32-17) at halftime.
UC Santa Barbara extended its lead back up to 22 (41-19) after a 7-0 run in the third quarter. With the game in the Gauchos' control, Long Beach State refused to quit as the Beach showed their grit and determination closing the frame on a 6-0 run to make it a 45-27 game heading into the final 10 minutes of action.
The fourth quarter belong to Long Beach State as the Beach finally found their rhythm scoring 20 points, while shooting 33.3 percent from the field. The LBSU defense was on point as the Beach did not allow the Gauchos to connect on a field goal in the final 10 minutes of play. However, UC Santa Barbara capitalized on their trips to the line as they sunk 10-of-12 free throws to hold onto the lead.
Despite Long Beach State's efforts, the Beach were unable to overcome the early deficit and fell to UCSB by eight (55-47).
The Gauchos got another solid performance from freshman Ila Lane who registered a double-double with 20 points and 20 rebounds. Also recording double-figures for UCSB were Danae Miller (13 points) and Tal Sahar (10 points).
Long Beach State returns home to face Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday, March 4 at 7 p.m.
