LAST TIME OUT
•   The Dirtbags won their opening series of the season, taking two out of three against Cal. Long Beach State won an exciting come-from-behind contest in 13 innings on Opening Night, then blanked the Golden Bears with a dominant pitching performance in a 4-0 win on Saturday.
•   The starting pitching was superb for the Dirtbags in the two wins. Adam Seminaris and Alfredo Ruiz combined to pitch 13 scoreless innings with just five hits allowed, no walks, and an impressive 21 strikeouts. Both players set career highs in strikeouts, with Seminaris racking up 11 and Ruiz finishing with 10. It's the first time two Dirtbags starters had collected double-digit K's in consecutive starts since Chris Mathewson and Darren McCaughan each had 10+ strikeouts at CSUN in a doubleheader Apr. 10, 2016.
•   Ruiz was named the Big West Pitcher of the Week following his performance, which included career highs in strikeouts (10) and innings pitched (7.0). It's the first weekly award win for the sophomore lefty, who threw over 78 percent of his pitches for strikes in the win.

SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
•   Washington lost its opening series at LMU last weekend, winning on Sunday, 4-3, to salvage the final game and avoid a sweep. The Huskies scored twice in the ninth inning to earn the comeback win. Washington is on a seven-game road trip to open the season, with a trip to Fresno State coming up this weekend. UW was 28-24 last season after making a run to the College World Series in the 2018 season.
•   UW hit just .182 in its opening series and scored just eight combined runs off the Lions. Junior CF Braiden Ward is a dangerous hitter at the top of the lineup for the Huskies. He hit .321 last season with a team-leading 41 runs and 11 doubles. He also led the team with 26 stolen bases in 31 attempts in 2019.
•   Washington's pitchers struggled with command on opening weekend, walking 23 LMU batters in just 25.0 innings pitched. Junior righty Gabe Smith was effective in his two relief appearances, tossing 2.1 perfect innings while picking up the relief win on Sunday.
•   LBSU holds a 7-5 advantage in the all-time series with Washington. The last meeting between the programs was a three-game series at Blair Field during the 2010 season. The Huskies won two out of three in Long Beach from Mar. 5-7.

LOOK WHO'S BACK
•   Leading hitter Jacob Hughey returns for his redshirt senior season after hitting .324 in 2019. He leads a large crop of returners in the lineup, as less than 28 percent of the at-bats taken last season were by departed players. Infielder Santino Rivera has 101 starts in his two years on campus. Other key contributors Chase Luttrell, Calvin Estrada, Tyler Porter, Kaden Hogan, Chris Jimenez, and Aidan Malm each started 28 or more games last season.
•   Junior Adam Seminaris is an experienced Friday Night Starter who had a 3.35 ERA in 14 starts in 2019. He has 24 starts in his Dirtbags career and is coming off a successful summer in the Cape Cod League. Sophomore Alfredo Ruiz made five starts as a freshman and has made great strides this offseason. Senior Tyler Gums should be a key reliever in a bullpen that will feature several new faces.

LB IN MLB
•   Long Beach State had more former players in the big leagues than any other college or university from 2010-17, with 12 MLB representatives in 2019, again placing the Dirtbags among the nation's leaders.
•   Jeff McNeil was named a 2019 NL All-Star, representing the New York Mets in the Midsummer Classic. His All-Star Game debut was the 20th All-Star appearance by a former Dirtbag, and the fourth in the last five seasons by four different players. There has been at least one former Dirtbag in 11 of the last 12 All-Star Games, with a combined 14 ASG selections since 2008.
