Beach Can’t Slow Down CSUN In 95-77 Road Defeat

Four players for the Beach finished in double-figures in the loss.
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Defending Big West Player of the Year Lamine Diane returned to action for CSUN Wednesday night in the Big West Conference opener for both teams, and Long Beach State were unable to find an answer defensively against the Matadors' star who scored 33 points in a 95-77 defeat.
CSUN (6-11, 1-0 Big West) shot 59.3 percent on the night and turned that hot shooting into a 42-31 edge on the glass that helped the Matadors hold off Long Beach State (5-12, 0-1 Big West). The Beach didn't have a bad night offensively, as Michael Carter III scored 19 points and led four players in double-figures.
Chance Hunter finished with 18 points, Colin Slater added 15 and Romelle Mansel scored a career-high 11 points in the setback.
It was the Beach that came out firing early, taking a quick 11-5 lead behind a pair of threes from Slater and Hunter followed by a three-point play from Carter. The Beach led as late as 24-22 with just under nine minutes remaining in the first, but the consistent offensive pressure from CSUN finally broke the LBSU defense in the form of a 12-2 run as the Matadors took a 34-26 lead.
Mansel buried his first 3-pointer of the season at the buzzer to end the half, and the Beach was able to carry some momentum into the start of the second half. A runner from Drew Cobb followed by a three from Slater cut the lead to six at 71-65 with 11:18 to play. CSUN answered with a pair of fast-break lay-ins followed by a dunk from Diane that pushed the edge back out to 12.
Long Beach State is back in action on Saturday, once more facing a road test at 7 p.m. against UC Santa Barbara.
