DAVIS, Calif. – The Long Beach State women's basketball team pushed UC Davis to the brink and had possession in a two-point game with just 8.7 seconds remaining, but came up just short in an exciting 57-55 loss at The Pavilion in Davis, Calif., on Thursday night.
Junior guard Shanaijah Davison led all scorers with 24 points, marking her third 20-plus point showing of the season, while Justina King added 15 points for the Beach (6-10, 1-2 Big West).
UC Davis (7-9, 2-1 Big West), meanwhile, was led by Sage Stobbart's double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) and Evanne Turner's 11-point game.
While there were several solid offensive performances on both sides, the key to the game was defense. Both teams kept the other off the board for several minutes at a time leading to multiple scoring droughts throughout.
Long Beach State forced UC Davis into 29 turnovers and took full advantage as the Beach scored 26 points off of turnovers. The Beach also collected 13 steals over the Aggies. However, UC Davis held the edge in rebounding (44-23).
LBSU struggled offensively in the first quarter shooting just 27.8 percent (5-for-18) from the field. With the Aggies connecting on 7-of-13 for a 53.8 shooting percentage, UC Davis held a six-point lead (17-11) at the end of the first quarter.
The Beach were held scoreless for the final four minutes of the first quarter and that drought continued until 7:53 on the clock in the second quarter. During that drought, the Aggies led the Beach by as many as 11 (22-11) at 8:16. A jumper by Davison ended the scoring drought to make it a 22-13 game.
Despite the large deficit, Long Beach State was not deterred. The Beach used a 9-0 run to cut the Aggies' lead down to two (22-20) at 5:20. However, UC Davis would close the first half with six-straight points, as the Beach trailed 33-27 at halftime.
UC Davis continued its scoring run into the second half as the Aggies opened the third quarter with five-straight points to extend their run to 11-0 (38-27) forcing an LBSU timeout at 6:53. The Beach battled, but were only able to muster six points in the quarter. Meanwhile, the Aggies' tallied nine in the frame, as Long Beach State headed into the fourth quarter down, 42-33.
Long Beach State played its best basketball in the fourth quarter as the Beach came out and outscored the Aggies 22-15. The Beach chipped away at UC Davis' lead and used a 10-0 run to erase the deficit and take a 48-47 lead with 3:00 minutes remaining on a bucket by Cydnee Kinslow. The lead didn't last long as the Aggies got a three from Cierra Hall 20 seconds later to regain the lead (50-48). But the Beach would not quit. LBSU never allowed UC Davis to lead by more than two-possessions before a three from King with 12.9 seconds left made it a 57-55 contest. After a jump ball was called, the Beach had possession with just 8.7 clicks on the clock, but LBSU was unable to make the last second layup.
The Beach received solid efforts from Ma'Qhi Berry and Aaryon Green, who each led the team with six rebounds, while Berry collected four steals.
