Chance Hunter recorded a career-high with 28 points, Joshua Morgan added his first career double-double in the loss.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Technicals and turnovers hampered Long Beach State in a slow start Thursday night against UC Davis, and two rallies came up just short ultimately in an 85-82 loss to UC Davis.
Joshua Morgan had his best all-around night as the freshman recorded a double-double with 10 points, a career-high 14 rebounds and three blocks, while Chance Hunter set a career high with 28 points but the early hole was too much to overcome.
Long Beach State (6-13, 1-2 Big West) led early, taking a 10-8 lead on a dunk from Morgan following threes from Hunter and Colin Slater, but one of the key moments of the game came early in a game that featured plenty of officiating taking center stage with four called technicals, two on each team.
After a personal foul on Michael Carter III, on the next possession the sophomore was called for a charge and then assessed a technical foul. The three fouls in quick succession forced the Beach to pull their point guard, and the momentum rapidly swung in favor of UC Davis (7-1, 1-1 Big West).
A similar situation forced a second Beach starter out of the game, as Romelle Mansel and Kennedy Koehler were assessed double technicals following a Mansel foul, and the Aggies continued to push, taking advantage of 12 first-half turnovers from LBSU and eventually opening up a 20-point edge at 39-19 with 6:05 remaining.
Rolling the dice by putting Carter III back into the game, Long Beach State were able to cut into the lead, with a Hunter layup just before the buzzer chipping the lead back to 13 points at 45-32.
The momentum stayed with the Beach as LBSU continued to fight back in the second half. A Hunter three cut the lead to single digits within the first five minutes of the half, and eventually a Morgan basket in the paint tied the game at 52-52 with 9:40 left with an opportunity for a three-point play.
Morgan's free throw missed, however, and a long rebound went to Max De Geest for an open three that also didn't fall and the magic of the initial comeback appeared to slip away.
UC Davis bounced back and would push the lead back up to double-digits in the closing minutes.
Long Beach State would mount one final rally. Down 11 with 44 seconds remaining, Jordan Griffin hit a three to cut the lead to eight, and turnovers plus two threes from Hunter cut the edge to two with seven seconds remaining. There just wasn't quite enough time, however as the Aggies would hold on for the 85-82 win.
The three from Griffin in the final minute was the 100th in the career for the senior, making the fourth-year Corona native the 16th in school history to hit the mark.
Long Beach State remains in the Walter Pyramid for two more games in the current homestand, next hosting Cal State Fullerton at 4:30 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the women's team on Saturday.
