Beach Falls Just Short In 66-62 Loss To Cal State Fullerton

Freshman Joshua Morgan finished with eight blocks, setting a single-game school record in the process.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State got off to a good start Saturday at home against Cal State Fullerton, but too many miscues from the Beach and a big mistake late allowed the Titans to come away with a 66-62 win.

Tied 60-60 in the final minute, Long Beach State (6-14, 1-3 Big West) lost the basketball on one of 23 turnovers on the night for the Beach, and Chance Hunter fouled Brandon Kamga from behind, resulting in an intentional foul that gave Cal State Fullerton (6-13, 1-3 Big West) the ball after the free throws, a sequence that LBSU never recovered from in the remaining seconds.

The conclusion of the game was in stark contrast to the beginning, that was very promising for the Beach on a reunion night celebrating 25 years in the Walter Pyramid. Long Beach State jumped out to a 7-0 lead on the strength of an early three from Hunter, and pushed their cushion out to 16-5 behind great defense in the first ten minutes of the contest.

Cal State Fullerton responded with a 19-3 run, undoing the great start, though LBSU bounced back and cut the Titan lead to two at halftime on a Colin Slater drive just before the horn.

In the second, Slater buried a three to start the half and put Long Beach State back in front. The junior finished with 10 points in the half and led the Beach with 19 on the night.

While the Beach led for most of the second half, the lead would never grow to more than six, and both teams were tied down the stretch at 55, 57 and 60 before the final minute.

Freshman Joshua Morgan was a force inside for the Beach on the evening, playing a critical role in limiting the Titans to just 18 points in the paint with eight blocks. That set a new single-game school record, breaking the previous records of seven held by Terrance O'Kelley, a member of the 1994-95 team that was in the building to celebrate 25 years of the Walter Pyramid on Saturday.

Long Beach State will close the current homestand on Wednesday, hosting UC Irvine on ESPN3 as part of the Black and Blue Rivalry.
