Cross Country To Open 2019 Season at the Mark Covert Classic

LBSU compete at Carbon Canyon Regional Park
Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State will begin the 2019 season this Saturday at the Mark Covert Classic hosted by Cal State Fullerton. The meet will be held at the Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Brea, Calif.

The first race is scheduled to begin at 8:30 in the morning with the men's 8K, followed by the women's 5K scheduled to start at 9:15 in the morning.

The men's program returns Big West Conference Men's Freshman of the Year, Tyler Spencer. The freshman led the Beach to a fifth place finish as a team, placing in the top 10 individually in the 8K with a personal-best time of 24.50.50. Joining Spencer this season will be returnees Ricky Cardenas, Diego Gonzalez, Gavin Korby, Jacob Korgan, Raymon Ornelas, Logan Schaefer, and Gabe Simpson.

On the women's side, the Beach will have plenty of returning runners, bringing back multiple sophomores from the 2018 cross country season. Seniors Alyssa Allen and Julie Vargas are joined by fellow returners Sofia Ramos and Ryley Fick. Ramos was one of the top finishers for the Beach at the Highlander Invitational, placing 44th with a personal-best time of 18:17.00.

LBSU will have multiple freshman on both the men's and women's side competing in their first collegiate cross country meet this Saturday. Freshman Nyah Chavez has recorded a personal-best time of 18:14.20 at Shadow Hills High School and is looking to be a top contender for the Beach.

Long Beach State will be back in action on September 14th at the UC Riverside Invitational.
