
LBSU T&F Men’s Program Win the 27th Annual Big West Challenge

Multiple event wins in the field and on the track.
SANTA BARBARA, Calif.- Long Beach State track and field men's program garnered the 27th Annual Big West Challenge team trophy on Friday at UC Santa Barbara with 202.5 points. The LBSU women finished in second place with a total of 178.5 points, led by multiple event wins on the track and in the field.
With a outstanding team effort, the men earned the title back after finishing in second last season. Opening up the competition, seniors Nicholas Hudson and Josh Carr had one-two finishes and double PR's of 208-01.00 and 196-11.00 in the hammer throw. Charlie Vernoy, Josh Carr, and Sebastian Coleman finished 2-3-4 in the discuss, putting up major points for the Beach. Senior Tavi Kammurallah had an outstanding performance in the shot put, winning the event with a new PR of 58-01.75 and moving up to ninth on the all-time list. Decathlete, John Broadhead also added valuable points for the Beach with his second place finish in the javelin throw, recording a new PR of 170-09.00.
In the jumps, Vincent Calhoun won his third consecutive event of the season in the men's high jump with a clearance of 6-08.75 and teammate John Broadhead followed in third at 6-06.75. Bethel Babatunde pulled out a second place finish in the triple jump with a PR of 46-07.25.
In the 100m, Kent Harris was just off his PR with an 10.59, finishing second, while Femi Ajose set a new-personal best of 10.75 to finish third. Harris also finished second in the 200m with a time of 21.58 and teammate Faris Babineaux in third at 21.70.
Senior Kemonie Briggs had a solid evening with another event win in the men's long jump (25-04.75) as well as his second place finish in the 400m, posting a time of 47.34. Koty Burton won the 110m hurdles with a new personal-best time of 14.02, placing him fifth on the all-time list.
The men's sprinters also won the 4x100m relay with a season-best time of 40.71, and placed fourth in the 4x400m relay.
On the women's side, Courtne' Davis won the 100m at 11.53 just off her meet record time, while Azaria Hill placed second in the event with a time of 11.76. The duo also finished first and third in the 200m, with Davis running 24.08 to win the event while Hill came in third with a 24.65. Junior Skylin Harbin has a solid and executed race in the 100mh, finishing second in the event with a new PR of 13.87 and moving to seventh on the all-time list. Melanee Williams also saw a PR in the event, recording a time of 14.54. Sophomore Shalee Reynolds competed in the 400m to place second in the event, running a time of 55.80 bringing in points for the Beach.
The women's sprinters won both the 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay, running times of 45.65 and 3:47.81.
The Beach had a pair of one-two finishes in the field events Friday as well. De'Ondra Young and Crystal Rodriguez had great performances in the hammer throw, with marks at 184-11.00 and 174-02.00 to contribute major points for LBSU. Malia Talavou finished third in the shot put with a mark of 42-03.25. In the javelin throw, junior Kaylee Shoemaker recorded a new PR of 125-10.00 to place third as well. Senior Bria Palmer had another event win in the women's high jump with a clearance of 5-08.75 to earn nine points for the Beach.
Long Beach State is back in action next weekend, when the team travels south to the Triton Invitational hosted by UC San Diego. The two-day meet begins on April 12.
