Long Beach State came up short on Sunday afternoon at UC Davis, losing on a walk-off walk in the 11th inning to fall, 6-5. The Dirtbags had 16 hits as a team, getting three hits each from Jacob Hughey and Calvin Estrada, who also added a career-high three RBIs in the game.
Â
Calvin Estrada matched his career high with three hits, while establishing a new personal best with three RBIs. He had RBI singles in each of the first two innings and tied the game with an RBI double in the seventh. Jacob Hughey had three hits as well, scoring twice and driving in his team-best 21st run of the season.
Â
Chris Jimenez was 2-for-5 in the leadoff spot while getting the start behind the plate. Aidan Malm also picked up two hits out of the DH spot and Chase Luttrell was 2-for-3 after entering the game as a pinch hitter. Riki DeSa started in left field and had a single and two walks in his three plate appearances before Luttrell replaced him. Nine different Dirtbags collected at least one base hit on Sunday and 14 players made it into the lineup.
Â
After Estrada got the Dirtbags on the board in the first, Hughey doubled the team's lead with a line drive RBI in the second inning. Laine Huffman executed a squeeze bunt to score Jimenez, then Estrada singled again to bring Hughey home and make it 4-0 Dirtbags in the second.

UC Davis scored once in the third and put up a four-spot in the sixth inning to take a 5-4 lead. Long Beach State immediately answered, getting back-to-back doubles from Malm and Estrada to start the seventh, but that was the end of the run production for the Dirtbags. After tying the game in the seventh, LBSU stranded eight runners the rest of the game, including three in the 10th inning after loading the bases with one out.
Â
Zak Baayoun got the start and allowed five runs on 11 hits in 5.2 innings pitched. The Aggies rarely squared him up and had several hits that weren't hit particularly hard, but were able to get to Baayoun for four runs in the sixth on three hits and a pair of walks.
Â
Tyler Gums recorded a strikeout for the final out of the seventh, then Alfredo Ruiz pitched two scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Dylan Spacke worked two scoreless innings and got two outs in the 11th before allowing the walk-off walk with the bases loaded.
Â
The 11 innings were the most the Dirtbags had played all season, and it's LBSU's second extra-inning loss this season.
Â
LBSU will be at home all next week, hosting LMU on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before welcoming UC Riverside to Bohl Diamond at Blair Field for a three-game weekend series. There are special start times for that series with the Friday game at 6 p.m. followed by a pair of 1 p.m. games on Saturday and Sunday.
