LAST TIME OUT
•  With a 4-2 win at LMU, the Dirtbags won their third consecutive midweek contest, all of which have been played on the road. LBSU got off to a slow start, falling into a 2-0 deficit after the top of the first inning, but battled back to tie the game in the third inning and tack on single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
•  All four of Long Beach State's runs at LMU were scored with two outs, beginning with a game-tying two-run single from Calvin Estrada. Jacob Hughey put the Dirtbags in front with an RBI single in the fifth inning and Santino Rivera capped the scoring with an RBI knock in the sixth.
•  Sophomore catcher Chris Jimenez had a pair of hits and a walk out of the leadoff spot, scoring twice to match his career-best in a game. He also set a new personal best with a pair of stolen bases in the win.
•  The starting lineup on Tuesday featured four freshmen, including a few players making their positional debuts. Freshman Chase Luttrell started in CF for the first time, freshman Brennan Rozell started in the outfield for the first time as he manned left, freshman Tanner Carlson made his second start at 1B and freshman Kaden Hogan got his 19th start at SS. Riki DeSa started at second base for the first time in his Dirtbags career, doubling off the left field wall and scoring in the sixth inning.
SCOUTING THE AGGIES
•  UC Davis won its opening Big West series against UC Riverside, but has gone just 1-8 in conference games since, including back-to-back sweeps against Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara. UCD has just two wins in its last 11 games, picking up an 8-6 win at No. 2 Stanford on Apr. 16, then a week later defeating San Francisco, 4-2.
•  Sophomore SS Tanner Murray leads the Aggies with a .380 average, collecting 49 hits including 10 doubles, plus 10 stolen bases. Junior 1B/OF Alejandro Lara is hitting .341 with a team-best 23 RBIs and three home runs. As a team, UC Davis leads the Big West with 62 stolen bases in 87 tries and 13 different Aggies have stolen at least one base this season.
•  The UC Davis pitching staff is not overpowering, ranking last in the Big West with just 166 strikeouts in 289 innings pitched this season. Closer Steve Ouellette picked up his third save in Tuesday's win over USF, and he has a 4.96 ERA in 14 appearances, striking out 12 in 16.1 innings pitched. Sunday starter Chris Brown pitched the series finale against LBSU last season, tossing eight innings of one-run ball to pick up the win.
•  The Aggies won the final two games of last season's series at Blair Field, but LBSU owns a 30-13 edge in the all-time series. The Dirtbags picked up a sweep in their last trip to Davis, winning by a combined score of 33-14 during the 2017 season.
Â
RBI MACHINE
•  Junior Jacob Hughey leads the Dirtbags with a .331 batting average to go along with a team-best 19 RBIs. He is also tops on the team in extra-base hits with his 11 doubles.
•  Hughey is also riding a current eight-game hitting streak, which is the longest of the season for the Dirtbags. He has five multi-hit games in that stretch, and has a hit in 11 of his last 12 games. The Long Beach native has gone without a hit in just five of his 32 games started this year.
Â
SPREADING THE LOVE
•  A total of 21 position players have appeared in multiple games for the Dirtbags this season, with 17 making eight or more starts and getting 27 or more at-bats.
•  Senior centerfielder Brooks Stotler leads the team with 37 games played including a team-high 33 starts.
•  With a group of pitchers returning from injury, the pitching staff has had its fair share of fluidity as well. Eight different pitchers have picked up two or more starts for Long Beach State this season with six of them earning four or more starts.
Â
LB IN MLB
•  Long Beach State had more former players in the big leagues than any other college or university from 2010-17, with 13 MLB representatives in 2018, again placing the Dirtbags among the nation's leaders.
•  Three Dirtbags made their MLB debuts last season, all in the span of two weeks. RHP Drew Gagnon debuted for the Mets on July 10, followed by infielder Garrett Hampson's debut on July 21 for the Rockies and INF Jeff McNeil on July 24 for the Mets.
•  The 2019 MLB season got underway with 10 former Dirtbags featured on Opening Day rosters to start the year: Troy Tulowitzki (Yankees), Evan Longoria (Giants), Jason Vargas (Mets), Bryan Shaw (Rockies), Nick Vincent (Giants), Marco Estrada (A's), Jared Hughes (Reds), Matt Duffy (Rays), Shane Carle (Braves), Garrett Hampson (Rockies), and Jeff McNeil (Mets).
•  RHP Drew Gagnon made his season debut with the New York Mets on Apr. 16, giving Long Beach State 11 representatives on big league rosters. That puts LBSU one ahead of Cal State Fullerton for the nation's lead.
•   Long Beach State also has representation among the coaching ranks as former players Brandon Hyde and Jeremy Reed are in their first years serving key roles in their respective dugouts. Hyde is the manager of the Baltimore Orioles and Reed is the hitting coach for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
