Campeau’s Walk-Off Gives Dirtbags Emotional 6-5 Win Over CSUN

Long Beach State nearly let a win get away on Friday night, but the Dirtbags were resilient in the ninth inning, securing a 6-5 walk-off win on an RBI single from Dominic Campeau. LBSU scored two runs in the ninth after CSUN had taken a 5-4 lead in the top half of the inning.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Friday night was a magical evening for Long Beach State (6-26, 1-3 Big West) as the Dirtbags earned a 6-5 walk-off win over CSUN (15-18, 3-4 Big West) in LBSU's home opener in conference play. Dominic Campeau's two-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning closed a two-run rally to give Long Beach State the win, kicking off a frenzied celebration on Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.

CSUN led the game 3-0 before a four-run Dirtbags rally in the fifth inning put Long Beach State on top. The lead would hold until the ninth when the Matadors scored twice in the top half of the inning to lead 5-4. The Dirtbags showed resiliency in the bottom of the ninth, scoring twice to earn the team's first walk-off win of the season.

Nine different Dirtbags collected hits on Friday night, led by Laine Huffman, who was 2-for-2. The senior led off and started at first base, making his first career appearance at that spot. Junior Jacob Hughey had a key two-run single in the fifth to put Long Beach State in front, 4-3. Hughey now has 17 RBIs to lead the team.

LBSU's four-spot in the fifth was fueled by the bunting game. The Dirtbags dropped four bunts in the frame and only one of those resulted in an out on a successful sacrifice. Hughey hit the only ball that left the infield that inning, knocking an 0-2 pitch the other way to bring home a pair with two outs and the bases loaded.

After CSUN scored twice in the top of the ninth to take a one-run lead, pinch-hitter Chase Luttrell got the rally started in the bottom half with an infield single to second base. Following a sac bunt, Brooks Stotler doubled off the first baseman's glove to score Luttrell and tie the game, 5-5. Two batters later, Campeau pulled a ball over the first baseman's head into the right field corner and was mobbed after rounding first base with the walk-off base hit.

Adam Seminaris went 5.1 innings, allowing one earned run on seven hits with six strikeouts. The two runs he allowed in the second inning went as unearned. Tyler Gums was solid in his 2.2 innings of work, allowing just a hit and a walk while striking out three Matadors.

Friday's win is also the first for interim co-head coaches Greg Bergeron and Dan Ricabal.

LBSU will look to clinch a series win on Saturday as junior RHP Nick Avila (0-1, 4.71 ERA) will square off against LHP Isaiah Nunez (5-3, 3.17 ERA) for CSUN. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
