
LBSU Strands 10 Runners in 3-2 Loss to CSUN

The Dirtbags outhit the visiting Matadors 12-7 on Saturday night but couldn’t cash in enough opportunities in a 3-2 defeat to even the series. Four players had multi-hit games for the Dirtbags but the team left 10 runners stranded in the one-run loss.
The Dirtbags outhit the visiting Matadors 12-7, but CSUN got four of their hits (all singles) in the second inning to put a decisive three-spot on the scoreboard.
Four separate Dirtbags had multi-hit games, as Laine Huffman, Calvin Estrada, Jacob Hughey and Santino Rivera each had two-hit nights. Freshman Tyler Porter delivered a two-run single shot back up the middle to bring home both Long Beach State runs in the bottom of the sixth. Eight of the nine Dirtbags starters recorded at least one base hit in the game.

Junior Nick Avila worked a career-high 7.1 innings on the mound and ended up the losing pitcher despite a second consecutive quality start. He surrendered three runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Jonathan Carlos pitched the final 1.2 innings and gave up just one single.
Long Beach State will turn to junior Zak Baayoun (1-6, 4.93 ERA) to try to win the series on Sunday afternoon. He will be opposed by RHP Blake Sodersten (1-2, 4.41 ERA) for the Matadors with first pitch at 1 p.m.
