Dirtbags Earn Series Win Over CSUN With 7-4 Sunday Victory

Long Beach State pounded out 12 hits and scored in four of the first six innings to take the rubber match against CSUN, 7-4. Freshman Chase Luttrell had a three hit game, as did sophomore Chris Jimenez who also drove in a pair of runs in the victory.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Dirtbags offense got back on track on Sunday afternoon, putting up seven runs on 12 hits as Long Beach State (7-27, 2-4 Big West) earned its first series win of the year against CSUN (16-19, 4-5 Big West) on Sunday afternoon.

Freshman Chase Luttrell had three hits in the cleanup spot to match his career high, and sophomore Chris Jimenez also matched his career high with a 3-for-4 day to go along with a pair of RBIs. Junior Jacob Hughey was 2-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored, his 18^th RBI of the season and his first career stolen base for good measure. Senior Brooks Stotler tripled and scored a pair of runs out of the leadoff spot.

Zak Baayoun picked up the win for the Dirtbags with a quality start on Sunday. He persevered through a tough first inning in which he surrendered two runs to the Matadors, making it through six innings while allowing three runs on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

The Dirtbags took the lead with two runs in the third inning, which started with a leadoff triple by Stotler. Hughey went the other way for an RBI single, and would come home on an RBI knock from Jimenez to make it 3-2 Long Beach State.

The big inning came in the fifth when the Dirtbags responded to CSUN's run in the top half of the frame with a three-spot in the bottom half. LBSU capitalized on a pair of CSUN errors and smacked four hits in the inning, including an RBI for Jake Vander Wal and another RBI single for Jimenez. The Dirtbags tacked on another run in the sixth as Luttrell singled home Hughey, who had started the inning with a single and swiped third base for the first steal of his Dirtbags career.

Alfredo Ruiz earned the save thanks to pitching the final three innings. He allowed a run on a solo home run but other than that surrendered just two hits with one strikeout.

Long Beach State does not have a midweek game next week, and will instead resume Big West play next Thursday night against Cal Poly. The series will run Thursday-Saturday with start times of 6 p.m. for the first two contests and a 2 p.m. start for the series finale.
