Cal Overpowers Dirtbags in Series Finale, 13-5

3/31/2019 5:41:00 PM | Baseball

Long Beach State outscored Cal 4-0 after the fifth inning, getting a three-run home run from junior Jake Vander Wal, but the Dirtbags couldn’t dig out of an early hole generated by three more Cal home runs on Sunday afternoon.

BERKELEY, Calif. – The Dirtbags (3-23) dropped the series finale at California (14-11) on Sunday afternoon at Evans Diamond as the Golden Bears continued to hit for power on their home field. Cal blasted three more home runs on Sunday to give them nine homers for the weekend. Remarkably, Long Beach State had only allowed seven home runs in the 23 games prior to this weekend series.

Jake Vander Wal hit a long ball of his own, a three-run shot in the eighth inning. Vander Wal leads the team with two homers this season and is second on the team with 10 RBIs this year. His round-tripper helped Long Beach State outscore Cal 4-0 after the fifth inning, but the deficit was too large to overcome.

Freshman Tyler Porter had a pair of singles and scored twice for the Dirtbags. Victor Carlino also singled and scored, Brooks Stotler drew a pair of walks and scored a run, Tanner Carlson had a single in his only plate appearance after starting the game at first base. Laine Huffman collected a pinch-hit line-drive single in the ninth in his brief cameo. In total, 18 position players appeared in the game for the Dirtbags on Sunday. Freshman Brennan Rozell got his first career start for Long Beach State, manning second base.

Long Beach State got on the board in the third inning as Stotler walked and Aidan Malm hit a double to put two men in scoring position for Luke Rasmussen. The senior DH hit a sacrifice fly on the screws to center, bringing Stotler home to give Rasmussen career RBI No. 100 in hisDirtbags career.

It was a tough outing for Sagun Gainey, who allowed three home runs and seven earned runs in 4.1 innings pitched. The final two pitchers put up scoreless innings for the Dirtbags, as Raul Rizo and Dylan Spacke each worked around singles to keep Cal off the scoreboard late.

The Dirtbags will conclude its five-game stretch against Pac-12 opponents on Tuesday, traveling to Tempe to face Arizona State on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. PT. LBSU opens Big West play next weekend with a three-game series at UC Irvine.
