Join us Saturday at Rhodes Tennis Center for a crucial conference matchup.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State will play a critical Big West Conference match Saturday to close their time in the Rhodes Tennis Center this season, hosting UC Santa Barbara at 11 a.m.
Long Beach State (11-3, 4-1 Big West) can move to the top of the Big West standings with a win over the Gauchos. For UC Santa Barbara (7-5, 1-0 Big West) Saturday's match will be the first in a string of seven straight conference matches to close the season after a win earlier this year at UC Davis.
With that win, the Gauchos are the only unbeaten team in conference play, but also have the most remaining matches. For the Beach, a win over UCSB on Saturday would move the Beach to 5-1 in league play and into a tie in the loss column with UCSB, CS Fullerton, and UC Irvine and a league-best five victories with road matches at UC Davis and UC Irvine remaining on the schedule.
Junior Natalia Munoz and sophomore Lalita Devarakonda have played a big part in Long Beach State's league success. The pair are 4-0 in doubles matches in league play while going 9-2 in dual matches. Devarakonda has a team-best 10-1 record in dual matches and is a perfect 3-0 in league play. Munoz leads the team in singles dual wins and is 11-2 on the year. Freshman Wiktoria Rutkowska will also play a key role. Going 8-5 at the top of the lineup, Rutkowska is 3-1 in league play with her only loss coming against #100 Petra Melounova of Hawai'i.
Munoz was named the Big West Player of the Week for her efforts in leading Long Beach State to a pair of wins last week, including a conference matchup against Hawai'i. Munoz won both of her matches in a 4-0 sweep of Cincinnati, and then led the Beach to a 5-1 win with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 that put LBSU in front for good in a league win over Hawai'i.
Munoz is the third different player from the Beach to be named Big West Player of the Week, joining Dominique Meyer and Rutkowska this season.
The Beach closes the regular season with four road matches. In addition to playing UC Davis on the team's trip to Central California, LBSU will also play Fresno State before returning to greater Los Angeles to play at LMU and UC Irvine prior to the Big West Tournament.
