
Long Beach State Sweep the Men’s Decathlon at the UCR Spring Break Invitational

Day, Broadhead, and Affor take top three in the event.
RIVERSIDE, Calif.- Long Beach State concluded competition at the Spring Break Classic at UC Riverside with the multis sweeping the men's decathlon, taking top three and fifth in the event to make LBSU history. Senior Herman Day led the Beach on the second day, as he won with a total of 7,410 points.
Day is now the national leader in the event after breaking his own stadium record of 7,249 points set in 2016. His point total ranks him third on the Long Beach State all-time list. After having a successful first day; Day kept the momentum going, placing in the top three out of five events on day two. The senior recorded multiple lifetime-bests in the 110mh, discuss throw, and pole vault to finish up competition in Riverside. Day finished the 110-meter hurdles in 14.98 and the 1500-meter run in 5:07.22. In the field, he posted a distance of 41.41 (135-10.00) in the discus, 4.65m (15-03.00) in the pole vault, and 56.27m (184-07.00) in the javelin. In the past three years, A new PR for Day, the senior has the highest decathlon score that would typically stand for national qualifying as well.
On the final day of the multi-events, senior John Broadhead continued his solid effort from day one as he finished the decathlon with a score of 6,660 points for second place. Broadhead had consistent performances throughout the day, scoring in the top four out of five events. Teammate Derreck Affor also completed his first decathlon of the season with solid marks, placing third with (6,468) to break his life-time best by 620 points. Devon Alvarado seen a PR in the 1500m, running a time of 5:05.64 to finish fifth in the event with 6,195 points.
On the women's side, sophomore Sydney Barnes climbed up the charts in her first-ever heptathlon to finish sixth with a total of 4,261 points. Barnes had a huge PR in the long jump, unleashing a jump of 18-03.75 to place third in the event. She also launched a new lifetime-best throw of 96-08.00 in the javelin to place in the top six. Freshman Lexi Nardoni also completed her first heptathlon with a total of 3,664 points to finish in 11th. Kaylee Shoemaker followed in 12th with 3,659 points.
The multis were the only Long Beach State student-athletes to see action this weekend. The remainder of the Beach squad will come out on Friday, March 29 at the Bob Larson Distance Invitational and Saturday, March 30 at the Jim Bush Legends Invitational.
