
LBSU Concludes Day One of Competition at the Bob Larsen Distance Carnival

LBSU throwers and distance athletes wrap up day one of competition.
LOS ANGELES, Calif.- Long Beach State's throwers and distance athletes started out the weekend's competition at the Bob Larson Carnival on Friday evening, posting strong results at the meet hosted by UCLA.
In the field, all five athletes in the women's hammer throw placed in the top nine for the Beach. Senior De'Ondra Young was the top scorer for the Beach, finishing second in the event with a throw of (58.51m) 191-11.00. Young holds the second best mark in the Big West Conference. Erykah McNairy and Amanda Truong followed in fourth and fifth place with marks at (51.59m) 169-03.00 and (50.44m) 165-06.00, a new PR for Truong.
In the men's throws, four out of five athletes placed top nine in the men's hammer. Senior Nicholas Hudson had a solid performance in the field, finishing fourth in the event with a new PR of (62.63m) 205-05.00. Josh Carr followed in fifth place with a throw of (58-05m) 190-05.00 and Sebastian Coleman in sixth with a new personal-record of (54.60m) 179-01.00.
In Friday's action on the track, LBSU distance squad recorded multiple PR's in the women's 1,500-meter dash. Junior Julie Vargas placed 12th in the invitational section with a new personal-best time of 4:45.82. Alyssa Allen and Tiana Prince placed fifth and seventh in the open section of the event with personal best times of 4:49.53 and 4:54.20.
On the men's side, Michael Simpson competed in the invitational section steeplechase for the first time in his career, placing fifth in the event with a time of 9:07.96. Freshman Tyler Spencer ran exclusively in the 5,000m with a time of 14:41.36 to finish ninth.
Long Beach State will continue their weekend with a full Saturday at the Jim Bush Legends Invitational hosted by UCLA.
