Temdiayo Yussuf finished with a double-double, and Deishuan Booker led the Beach with 23 points.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – It took five extra minutes, but the Beach held Cal Poly to just six points in overtime and brought down the Mustangs on the road 76-68.
Deishuan Booker was a perfect 8-for-8 from the line in the overtime period and finished with 23 points after coming into the second half scoreless. Booker made 18 straight free throws after missing his first and added four assists for Long Beach State (9-16, 3-6 Big West).
Temidayo Yussuf recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 12 rebounds and 10 points and four assists, while Mason Riggins pitched in 13 points off of the bench.
Booker only made two field goals on the night, but his second was one of the big shots of the evening. A Cal Poly (5-17, 1-8 Big West) steal and a layup from Mark Crowe put the Mustangs on top 67-66 with 2:29 to play. Yussuf made two free throws on the next trip down, and then after a stop, Booker buried a step-back three to put the Beach up by four, the key basket in overtime.
Forced to foul, Cal Poly sent Booker to the line six more times and the senior was automatic down the stretch to finish off the win.
Neither team led by more than eight points in what was a close contest throughout. The Beach took an early lead with a high tempo, but Cal Poly would battle back and take a 34-30 lead into halftime behind 16 first-half points from Donovan Fields.
Long Beach State would pull back into the lead, tying the game at 42 on a post move from Riggins and eventually going up by four at 48-44 on a pair of free throws from Booker. That would remain the cushion for most of the remainder of the second half, including into the final three minutes.
Up three at 62-59 win 1:29 to play, Marcellus Garrick hit a three to tie the game with 59 seconds left, but neither team would get on the board in the rest of the final minute to send the game to overtime.
Long Beach State will stay on the road for their next two games, first facing Cal State Fullerton in Titan Gym next Wednesday, February 13. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
