Deishuan Booker scored nine of his 18 points in overtime.
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Fighting from behind at halftime, Long Beach State battled back to force overtime and then held off UC Riverside in a 71-67 (OT) win behind an outstanding defensive effort.
Jordan Roberts finished with 18 points, one off of his career high to help get the Beach to the overtime period, where Deishuan Booker took over, scoring nine of his 18 points to guide Long Beach State (11-18, 5-8 Big West) to the victory.
Trailing UC Riverside (9-19, 3-9 Big West) by six at halftime despite 12 points from Roberts, Long Beach State was able to pull back even on the strength of an outstanding defensive stretch. Down 50-43 after a Callum McRae bucket with 11:02 remaining, the Beach would hold UC Riverside scoreless over the next seven-plus minutes, ultimately taking a 52-50 lead.
A 3-pointer by Dominick Pickett put the Highlanders back in front, but the teams would trade baskets through the closing minutes. Tied at 57-57 in the final minute, Roberts put the Beach in front with a pair of free throws, but the Highlanders answered with a jumper from Jordan Gilliam with 22 seconds remaining. Going inside, Long Beach State was unable to convert their chance to win the game in regulation.
In the extra five minutes, the Highlanders took a lead at 63-62, but Booker was fouled on two ensuing possessions, leading to free throws that ultimately would put the Beach up four at 67-63. With UCR needing to foul in the final minute, both Booker and Bryan Alberts sank their shots to secure the win.
Those free throws would push Booker up to 216 makes on the season, passing Leon Wood for the most in Big West Conference history and keeping the senior in the nation's lead in the category. Alberts finished with 16, the third LBSU player in double-figures joining Booker and Roberts.
Long Beach State will play their final road game of the regular season next Thursday at UC Santa Barbara before closing out the year in the Walter Pyramid against Cal Poly and a rematch with the Highlanders.
