Junior Colin Slater scored 20 points to lead the Beach in the defeat.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Junior Colin Slater scored 20 points to lead the Beach against Pacific, but the guard didn't get much help as cold shooting from LBSU doomed the Beach in a 65-46 loss to the Tigers Saturday.
Long Beach State (3-7) shot a season-low 31.5 percent from the field and had just three assists as Pacific (9-3) controlled the game down the stretch. Slater's play was a bright spot for the Beach on the night, as the junior finished with a new career-high. Joshua Morgan added nine points with a team-high six rebounds, and Michael Carter III added nine points as well but that trio accounted for 38 of the team's 46 total points on the evening.
An emphatic putback dunk from Carter III was a great start for the Beach, but it quickly soured as the Tigers went on a 9-0 run to answer and would never again trail. Things would remain close for a while, as Jordan Roberts cut the lead to one at 13-12 on a fast break. Pacific would grow their lead to 15 at 33-18, but a three from Slater helped the Beach trim the edge to 11 at halftime.
A crucial sequence in the second half came as the clock ticked under 16 minutes, as Romelle Mansel picked up a steal leading to a fast break that had the chance to cut the Pacific lead to six at 38-32. However, a miss on the layup led to a three going the other direction, a five-point swing that really hurt the chances for a comeback.
A three-point play from Roberts cut the lead to eight at 13:35, but Long Beach State went cold at just the wrong time again, spending a four-minute stretch without a point that led to a 10-0 run from Pacific that ultimately put the game out of reach.
Long Beach State will have a week to prepare for their next game when the Beach will face USC on the road on Sunday, December 15. That game will be the fourth of the season against a Pac-12 opponent for LBSU.
