Long Beach State has now won nine straight homecoming contests.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State forced San Diego into 29 turnovers leading to 30 points for the Beach as LBSU sent a great homecoming crowd home happy with a 74-62 win. That finished off a doubleheader sweep for the Beach as the women's program were also winners earlier in the day.
Chance Hunter led the way with 21 points and nine rebounds, while Colin Slater had 18 points while shooting 7-for-10 from the field, and Michael Carter III was Long Beach State's third double-figure scorer with 14 points.
Long Beach State (1-1) was led by its defense though for the second straight game, making 10 steals and forcing USD into 29 turnovers. The Beach scored 30 of their 74 total points off of turnovers, and that helped spark the initial run that helped put away San Diego (0-2).
Down six after the first five minutes, a steal from Romelle Mansel led to a fast break basket from Drew Cobb and that helped spark a run for the Beach who would take their first lead of the game at 15-14 after another basket from Cobb.
Long Beach State would never again trail in the contest. Trever Irish pushed the lead to five points with a dunk with 6:52 remaining, and while USD cut the lead to one just before the end of the half, Slater was able to knife his way through the lane for a lay-in in the closing seconds to put the Beach in front 37-34.
In the second half, Long Beach State really locked down the Toreros defensively, holding USD to just 28 points to help seal the win. With a one-point lead at 42-41, Hunter elevated for a dunk that retained the momentum for the Beach. An Irish bucket was followed by another dunk, this time from Jordan Roberts as well as a trey from Hunter as Long Beach Statefinished off a 11-0 run to take a 12-point lead.
San Diego only got within single-digits at one other point, as Long Beach State cruised to the win to improve to 11-1 all-time with the home opener serving as Homecoming, now having won nine straight.
Long Beach State will now return to the road, making a trip to the Bay Area to face Stanford on Tuesday, November 12 followed by No. 20 Saint Mary's on Thursday, November 14.
