Big Cardinal runs in the first half proved too much for the Beach to overcome.
STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford came out of the gate with hot shooting and Long Beach State couldn't survive the first-half storm, falling 86-58 on the road against the Cardinal on Tuesday night.
Stanford (3-0) made three of their first four shots, all 3-pointers to take a 9-5 lead in the opening minutes against Long Beach State (1-2).
As the lead continued to grow, Long Beach State bounced back to cut the Stanford lead to 10 on a jumper from Max De Geest with 11:18 remaining, but unfortunately that run from the Beach would be short-lived as Stanford answered with a run of their own.
With the Beach down 10 at 26-16, Stanford erupted for a 14-0 run that ultimately proved to decide the game, part of a 21-6 run to close out the half in favor of the Cardinal.
Long Beach State recovered defensively in the second half, outshooting Stanford 48 to 45 percent and holding even on the scoreboard outside of a late 3-pointer, but the damage had been done. De Geest scored 10 of his team-leading 13 points in the second half, as did Jordan Griffin who was a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor and 2-for-2 from three in the second half.
The Beach got a lift from the bench with 38 points, including the team's two leading scorers on the evening in De Geest and Griffin. Trever Irish also scored a career-high six points in his 12 minutes, while Jeffrey Yan made his collegiate debut with a made free throw in a rebound in the final minutes.
The trip to Bay Area continues for Long Beach State, who will remain in Northern California to face No. 18 Saint Mary's on the road on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
