Long Beach State Comes Up Just Short In Upset Bid At UCLA

The Beach led UCLA for over 30 minutes Wednesday Night but couldn’t quite hold off the Bruins.
LOS ANGELES – In the 13 previous meetings between Long Beach State and UCLA inside Pauley Pavilion, none were closer than Wednesday night's contest between the teams. Long Beach State controlled large stretches of play and led for over 30 minutes total, but the Bruins were able to pull even late and hold off a late charge from the young LBSU squad in a 69-65 loss for the Beach.
Long Beach State (0-1) would jump out to and early lead and ultimately led for most of the contest as many of the new faces for the Beach had strong debuts.
Sophomore Chance Hunter had 16 first-half points to help stake Long Beach State to their lead, and Michael Carter III led all scorers with 20 points on the evening. Freshman Josh Morgan also impressed, finishing with 10 points seven rebounds and three blocks in over 30 minutes of playing time in his collegiate debut.
A 3-pointer from Carter III sparked a 12-1 run in the first half, as Hunter drained a trio of three-pointers himself as Long Beach State was on fire early in the half. That early spell of strong shooting would go away for LBSU, but their defensive effort did not as the Beach held UCLA (1-0) to just 20 points through the first 14 minutes and 27 in total in the first half to take a six-point lead into the locker room at 33-37.
After holding the Bruins to 39.3 percent shooting in the first half, the Beach was able to do more of the same, but had to do so with fewer bodies that would ultimately undermine Long Beach State's chances at coming away with the victory. Colin Slater and Hunter both picked up two quick fouls to each have four before the 16-minute media timeout, leaving the Beach dangerously thin and in effectively a six-man rotation for 12 minutes.
Nevertheless, Long Beach State held off the Bruins over that period, maintaining the lead and even stretching it to six at 56-50 with 5:44 remaining on a Carter III drive.
UCLA chipped away at the lead however, and took first a tie at 58-58 and then the lead at 60-58 with 2:14 remaining, their first lead of the second half following a 10-2 run. Carter III hit a final 3-pointer to cut the lead back to one position in the final minute with 47 seconds remaining, but the Bruins were effective enough at the line to hold on to that late edge and come away with the victory.
The four-point defeat to the Bruins was the closest that Long Beach State has come in 14 tries at Pauley Pavilion, dating back to a six-point 1983 loss. Long Beach State won the most recent meeting on a neutral floor, and UCLA has never visited Long Beach State.
Long Beach State will return home this weekend, hosting San Diego at 3:30 p.m. as part of a Homecoming doubleheader with the Women's Basketball program.
