BEFORE KICKOFF
• The Beach dropped its third match against a Top 10 opponent last Thursday, ending its non-conference slate with a 3-0 loss to No. 5 BYU. Long Beach State kept the Cougars off the scoreboard in the first half, but the visitors broke through for three in the second half to pick up the win.
Â
• LBSU was playing without four of its starters/regular contributors in the BYU match, which limited the Beach bench. Long Beach used just five substitutes in the game, but the injuries opened the door for the LBSU debuts of freshmen Alexis Komisza and Emily Jauregui.
Â
• Lena Silano and Kaitlin Fregulia each had a pair of shot attempts to lead the Beach against BYU. In goal, Ashley Seymour made a career-high five saves while playing the full 90 minutes.
Â
• Long Beach State heads into conference play after a challenging non-conference schedule. Six of LBSU's seven losses this season have come against teams who were either nationally ranked, or have received votes at some point this season. The Beach has also faced a trio of nationally-ranked teams this year: No. 4 UCLA, No. 7 Penn State and No. 5 BYU.
Â
SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS
• Cal Poly is 3-7-1 entering conference play, coming off a 2-1 win over Seattle. The Mustangs have played just three matches at home this season, and have gone 2-1-0 in those games. Cal Poly opened the season with a 0-0 draw at San Jose State, and hasn't kept a clean sheet since, allowing 20 goals over its next 10 matches.
Â
• Camille Lafaix leads the Mustangs with three goals this season, and is also tops on the squad with a pair of assists, giving her eight points so far this year. After her, seven different players have scored once to tie for second on the team.
Â
SERIES RECORD vs. CAL POLY
• The Beach has gone 8-12-4 all-time against Cal Poly, winning three of the last four meetings. Long Beach State won last season's meeting 1-0 in double overtime at George Allen Field on a game-winning goal from Elysia Laramie. LBSU has won three of the last four meetings with the Mustangs, and has a 4-6-2 mark in SLO.
Â
SCOUTING THE GAUCHOS
• UCSB is 4-3-3 so far this season, but the Gauchos have won three of their last four matches with a combined score of 10-4. All three of UCSB's losses this season have come against strong Northern California programs: vs. No. 20 Cal (2-0), vs. No. 2 Stanford (1-0) and at Santa Clara (2-0).
Â
• Preseason All-Big West selection Shaelan Murison leads UCSB with eight goals and three assists this season. Her 19 points are easily the most on the team, as are her 49 shots this season, 33 more than any of her teammates. Isabella Viana is second on the team with three goals and two assists, despite making just three starts this season.
Â
• UCSB was picked second in the Big West Preseason Coaches Poll, finishing seven points behind favorites Long Beach State. That sets this match as the most anticipated Big West matchup coming into the 2019 campaign.
Â
SERIES RECORD vs. UCSB
• Long Beach State holds a 17-11-1 all-time edge in the series with UC Santa Barbara. After losing the first six meetings, the Beach has gone 17-5-1 since 1998, and has won nine of the last 10 matches against the Gauchos. Last season, LBSU won 1-0 in a regular season match and then defeated UCSB 2-0 in the Big West Tournament championship game.
Â
PARIS TRIP
• Prior to the season, the Long Beach State women's soccer team went on a foreign tour to France for the 2019 Women's World Cup. The Beach played a pair of exhibition matches against the Argentina National Team during an 11-day trip to Paris and surrounding cities. LBSU then witnessed the Argentines earn their first Women's World Cup point during a 0-0 draw with Japan at the Parc de Princes. The Beach capped off the trip in Reims, France where the team witnessed Team USA's historic 13-0 victory over Thailand in their World Cup opener.
