Laramie’s Late Brace Gives Beach Soccer 2-1 Win at Cal Poly

10/3/2019 9:49:00 PM | Women's Soccer

The Beach trailed 1-0 with just seven minutes to play in Thursday’s Big West opener at Cal Poly, but that’s when Elysia Laramie intervened. The sophomore scored an equalizer in the 84th minute, then scored another goal just 32 seconds later to give the Beach a wild comeback victory.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – It looked like the equalizer might never come for Elysia Laramie on Thursday night at Cal Poly (3-8-1, 0-1-0 Big West), but the sophomore eventually broke through in the 84th minute to tie the match. Just 32 seconds later, she struck again for the game-winning goal to give Long Beach State (3-7-0, 1-0-0 Big West) a thrilling 2-1 win in the team's Big West Conference opener.

Laramie has enjoyed playing against the Mustangs so far in her career. Her first goal was a game-winner against Cal Poly last season in double overtime, and she has now scored three of her five career goals against the Mustangs. After starting Thursday's match on the back line, Laramie was moved up the pitch and changed the game in the second half. The sophomore took a career-high seven shots in the match, with four of them on target.

If those numbers aren't impressive enough, Laramie was actually about a collective foot away from scoring a handful of goals on Thursday. She had a pair of shot attempts miss the post by inches, one on each side of the field. Laramie also had an equalizing goal taken off the board on an offsides call in the 69th minute.

The equalizer eventually came from a set piece, as Kaylee Ramirez's free kick went to Kaitlin Fregulia. The redshirt junior headed the ball off the crossbar, and in the scrum in front of goal it was Laramie who got enough on it to force the ball over the line.

Before anyone could catch their breath, Laramie was at it again. Just 32 seconds later, she found the back of the net again to put the Beach on top. Katie Pingel played a great long ball up the left side, and Laramie bullied her way onto the ball before beating the Cal Poly keeper for the game-winner in the 85th minute.

The Beach outshot the Mustangs 14-12, with a 9-6 advantage in the second half. LBSU also held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks on the night. Marta Alemany Sanchez earned the win in goal, making three saves over 90 minutes.

Long Beach State will look to ride the momentum of this win into Sunday afternoon, when the Beach will visit UC Santa Barbara for a 1 p.m. showdown.
