Long Beach State Falls Short in 1-0 Loss at UCSB

The Beach suffered its first conference loss of the season on Sunday afternoon, falling 1-0 on the road against UC Santa Barbara. The Gauchos took the lead in the 14th minute and were able to hold on, getting a penalty save in the second half.
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Facing another first-half deficit on the road, Long Beach State (3-8-0, 1-1-0 Big West) was unable to stage a comeback against UC Santa Barbara (5-3-3, 1-0-0 Big West) on Sunday afternoon, falling 1-0 against the Gauchos. UCSB took the lead in the 14th minute and held the Beach off the scoreboard to preserve the win.

Elysia Laramie led the Beach with a pair of shot attempts, and Charlotte Guillory and Kaylee Ramirez each put a shot on target in the contest. Marta Alemany Sanchez made three saves in goal, all in the first half.

Long Beach State posed the bigger threat after halftime, producing multiple chances at goal. The best opportunity came in the 53rd minute, as Kaitlin Fregulia was pushed to the ground inside the penalty area, earning a penalty kick for the Beach. Ramirez stepped over the ball, but her shot attempt was saved to keep the UCSB lead at 1-0.

The Beach continued to apply pressure until the closing minutes, when a handball from the Gauchos gave LBSU the chance to score from a set play. Angela Morales served the ball into the penalty area, where Fregulia headed the ball towards a pair of attacking Beach players. Unfortunately, UCSB goalkeeper Hanna DeWeese was able to intervene and prevent the scoring chance.

After splitting its conference-opening road trip, the Beach will play three consecutive Big West matches back at George Allen Field. LBSU returns to action on Thursday, hosting Cal State Fullerton for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
