The Tritons scored two second-half goals to give the Beach their first loss on the road this season.
LA JOLLA, Calif. – Long Beach State took a first-half lead behind a Kailey Supa goal, but two goals for the Tritons in the second half allowed UC San Diego to come away with a 2-1 win from La Jolla.
On a windy, rainy night, it was a tale of two halves with some help from mother nature in La Jolla. Jordan Candelaria took the opening shot of the game, forcing UC San Diego (8-3-5, 4-1-3 Big West) keeper Charlotte Wilfert into a save, the first of eight shots in the half for Long Beach State (8-4-5, 2-3-3 Big West).
Long Beach State kept the pressure on, as the first corner of the game was awarded to the Beach in the 17th minute. Earning a second corner minutes later, Cherrie Cox battled past Wilfert to get a shot off behind the keeper, but it was cleared off the line by defender Chloe Yates. Senior Zoe Willis returned the favor for the Beach just after that, as a direct pass to Ava Tibor allowed the forward to get a long shot off past a charging Aurora Schuck, but Willis chased down the ball just before it trickled into the net for a key save.
Continuing to push forward, Radisson Banks looked to be in behind but was flagged offside, and then Cox forced Wilfert into another save from inside the box in the final five minutes. After that play, Banks sent in an entry pass that found Cox, whose shot was deflected into the crossbar, and the ensuing rebound bounced around before being flicked in by Kailey Supa to open the scoring in the 41st.
Banks had the first shot of the second half, but UC San Diego had the first corner as the tilt of the game shifted along with the side switch. The Tritons found the equalizer in the 62nd minute, as a Natelie Oca low cross found a running Olivia Shih with just the fourth shot of the game for UCSD.
Schuck came up with a big save to keep the score even in the 78th minute, but a defensive third giveaway led to a huge chance for the Tritons, as Kiki Vostermans played through Lana Gilligan who scored the go-ahead goal in the 79th.
Looking for one last chance, Supa had a chance for the brace but another defensive clearance behind the keeper for UCSD helped the Tritons collect the win. Long Beach State returns to George Allen Field on Saturday, hosting UC Riverside at 7 p.m. in a critical Big West game with three games remaining in the regular season.
