Beach Remain In Hunt For Big West Tournament Berth Despite Tough Night In Orem
OREM, Utah – Long Beach State created several quality looks on Wednesday night but could not find the breakthrough, falling 2-0 to Utah Valley in Big West play at UCCU Stadium. Utah Valley (12-4-3, 8-0-2 Big West) clinched at least a share of the Big West title with the win, while the Beach (9-5-5, 3-4-3 Big West) remains on the bubble in the race for the final three spots in the conference tournament.
The Beach's best chance of the first half came in the 28th minute, when Cherrie Cox found space and sent a shot off the crossbar. Cassidy Drago's follow-up attempt was saved by the Utah Valley keeper.
Utah Valley opened the scoring in the 35th minute on a goal from Nixan Jackson.
Long Beach State had another strong opportunity in the 45th minute, just seconds before halftime. Cox slid a well-weighted ball to Kailey Supa, who dribbled into space near the edge of the box and got a shot off, but it was held by the keeper.
In the 59th minute, Utah Valley's Mia Owens was shown a yellow card after clipping Cox, who appeared to have a pathway toward goal. After a replay review, the referee determined it was not a clear goalscoring opportunity and issued no further action.
The Beach stayed within reach in the 81st minute when Kana Uchida made a goal-line stop. A free header off a corner kick found the back post, but Uchida, positioned inside the net, kept the ball from fully crossing the line. Utah Valley doubled its lead two minutes later on a goal from Sadie Beardall in the 83rd minute.
Cox added a couple more shots in the second half, and Sydney Beaumont put a shot on target, but Long Beach State was unable to find the net.
The Beach closes the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 31, at 1 p.m. at home against Cal State Bakersfield at George Allen Field, with the final three conference tournament spots still up for grabs.
