Men’s Water Polo Falls At No. 11 UC San Diego

Long Beach State traveled south and suffered a 7-5 loss against No. 11 UC San Diego.
LA JOLLA, Calif. – Long Beach State went on the road to face No. 11 UC San Diego, but came up just short in a 7-5 loss on Wednesday evening.
No. 7 Long Beach State (6-3) was led by freshman Jonathan Wong, who had two goals for the Beach, but No. 11 UC San Diego (7-1) scored three goals in the fourth quarter to come away with the win.
The Tritons scored in the first two minutes of the first quarter, but junior Austin Stewart continued his scoring streak, responding with a tying goal with 4:22 left in the first. UC San Diego found themselves up at the end of one with a score of 2-1. Wong would later score in the opening minutes of the second quarter tying the game back up at 2-2. At the half, the Tritons and the Beach were knotted at 3-3 apiece.
Long Beach State's first lead of the game came from Troy Kaltenbach who scored his sixth goal of the season to put up the Beach 5-4 with 5:02 left in the third. A crucial penalty shot would be awarded to UCSD to tie the game in the fourth and the Tritons held on to grab the upset win.
Sophomore Marwan Darwish finished with nine saves on the night, bringing his total on the year to 54.
Long Beach State will look to bounce back against No. 2 UCLA in the team's home opener at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center this Friday at 7 p.m.
