Cross Country Heads To Riverside To Compete In Their Second Competition Of The Season

The first event is scheduled to start on Saturday at 7:30 a.m
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Long Beach State will compete in their second meet of the season on Saturday, September 15 at the 38th annual UC Riverside Invitational. The women's 6k race is scheduled to start at 7:30 a.m., and the men's 8k will kick off at 8:05 a.m. Both races are scheduled to take place at the UCR Agricultural Operations Course.Â

OPENER AT MARK COVERT CLASSIC
The men's and women's cross country team is coming off of a successful season opener that took place at the Mark Covert Classic hosted by Cal State Fullerton. Seniors Trevor Stangle and Mikayla Florez lead the cross country team in their first competition of the year and were top finishers for LBSU. Stangle competed in the 8K and ran a time of 25:12.4, placing him 12th overall which helped lead the team to a sixth place finish out of 12 competing schools.

Long Beach State's newcomers have shined early in the season opener as Tyler Spencer finished just behind Stangle in 14th place, and freshman Raymon Ornelas was the third finisher for the Beach. On the women's side, newcomer Sofia Ramos was next to cross the line behind Florez with a time of 19:05.04 placing her at 64th, and freshman Leslie Diaz was next in 80th.

LAST YEAR IN RIVERSIDE
The Long Beach State women's team finished in 16th place amongst 29 teams with a total of 492 points. Mikayla Florez was a top finisher for the Beach and placed 56th among 219 runners in the 6k race in a time of 21:28.0. On the men's side, LBSU placed 23rd among 33 teams, tallying a total of 608 points as George Martinez led the way for the Beach, posting an 8K time of 25:30.4.
