Seniors Lead Cross Country In First Competition Of The Year

Trevor Stangle and Mikayla Florez were the top finishers for LBSU at the Mark Covert Classic.
BREA, Calif. – Seniors Trevor Stangle and Mikayla Florez were the top finishers for the men and women respectively as Cross Country completed their first competition of the year at the Mark Covert Classic.
The men finished in sixth place out of 13 competing schools, led by Stangle who completed the 8K course at Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Brea in a time of 25:12.4, placing 12th overall and beating his previous collegiate best at that distance by over a minute.
Long Beach State's newcomers also had a strong showing, as Tyler Spencer finished just behind Stangle in 14th overall, and freshman Raymon Ornelas was the third finisher the Beach, coming in 29th overall with a time of 25:37.3. Transfer Ricky Cardenas crossed the line in 64th, while three freshmen closed out the top six for the Beach in Gavin Korby, Diego Gonzalez and Moises Rendon.
On the women's side, Mikayla Florez continued to lead the team, finishing 48th overall with a time of 18:53.0 for the 5K as Long Beach State finished in 10th out of 12 teams. Newcomer Sofia Ramos was next across the line with a time of 19:05.9 in 64th overall, and fellow freshman Leslie Diaz was next in 80th.
Freshman Tiana Prince, senior Alexis Ceballos, and junior Julie Vargas were the next three finishers for the Beach.
Both teams are back in action on Saturday, September 15 at the UC Riverside Invitational.
