No. 6 Men’s Water Polo Starts Season With Two Wins

Long Beach State picked up wins over No. 19 Cal Baptist and Chapman.
LA JOLLA, Calif. – No. 6 Long Beach State opened up the 2018 season on the road at the Triton Invitational, picking up wins over No. 16 Cal Baptist and Chapman. The Beach will remain in San Diego for two more games tomorrow as part of the tournament.
The Beach opened the 2018 season with a comfortable 16-9 win over No. 16 Cal Baptist (0-1), outscoring the Lancers 5-2 in each of the first two quarters to hold a 10-4 lead at halftime. Senior Chandler Kaltenbach led Long Beach State (2-0) with four goals, securing a hat trick with over two minutes remaining in the second quarter.
Redshirt junior Austin Stewart and freshman Johnathan Wong each added three goals in the win for the Beach. Also on the scoresheet for Long Beach were Andrew Goodenough (2 goals), Austin Stevenson, Nemanja Bakic, and Keegan Wicken.
Long Beach State led by as many as nine in the final quarter, as Goodenough's goal with 2:58 to play made it 15-6 Beach.
The opening day of the season continued with matchup against Chapman (0-1), ranked No. 4 in the Division III rankings. Austin Stevenson opened the scoring with the first of his game-high three goals, and Long Beach State took a 4-2 lead after the first quarter.
The Beach tallied the only goal in the second quarter, but Chapman chipped away at the lead, cutting the LBSU edge to two goals at 7-5. Fourth quarter goals from Curtis Casper and Luke Ritter would quickly push the lead back up to four, and Long Beach State held on for a comfortable 11-8 win.
The Triton Invitational continues tomorrow, as Long Beach State will face No. 10 UC Santa Barbara in the first of two games tomorrow. That contest is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
