Long Beach State will open the season at the same park that will hold the Big West Championship.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State will begin the 2018 season this Saturday at the Mark Covert Classic hosted by Cal State Fullerton. The meet will be held at the Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Brea, Calif., the same site as the 2018 Big West Championships.
The first race will begin at 8 a.m. in the morning as the Beach will try to get out to a quick start on the season.
The women's team returns the top runner from last season in Mikayla Florez. The senior won the Pepperdine Invitational in the opening meet one year ago and will look to lead the Beach in continued improvement. Last season, Florez finished 14th at the conference championship and joins four other returners that competed at the Big West Championships last season in Alexis Ceballos, Maureen Fitzsimmons, Taylor Owen and Julie Vargas.
On the men's side, the Beach has plenty of returning runners, bringing back four of the eight competitors from last year's Big West Championship. Seniors Trevor Stangle and Patrick Burciago are joined by fellow returners Logan Schaefer and Ezra Sotelo in returning to the squad. A sophomore, Sotelo was the top finisher of the returning group last season at the conference championship after finishing in 28th place.
Shawn Winget's team will have plenty of depth, as the Beach has reloaded with nine newcomers on the men's side and 14 on the women's side with a mix of junior college transfers and incoming freshmen.
"We have a lot of new blood, which brings plenty of excitement as we start the year," said Winget. "We're looking to keep elevating the program, and that starts this weekend."
