Jasmine Hardy led the Beach with 15 points, seven rebounds.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State was within five in the third quarter against Arizona, but the Wildcats pulled away down the stretch in a 70-43 victory over the Beach on Sunday.
Freshman Jasmine Hardy led Long Beach State (1-9) with 15 points and seven rebounds, a new-career high in scoring and one off of her season-best on the boards.
Facing a team with the nation's leading scorer in Aari McDonald, the Beach was aggressive early and forced her into foul trouble limiting her minutes, but weren't able to convert that early action into points as Arizona (8-1) started the game on a 14-0 run. Sydney Bordonaro scored five points in the first off of the bench to help get the Beach going offensively, but Arizona led 20-9 after the first ten minutes.
With McDonald on the bench through the entire second quarter, Long Beach State held close to the Wildcats, and made a big push to start the third. Hitting Shanaijah Davison on the back-door to start the quarter, Long Beach State started the third on an 8-0 run, capped by a lay-in from Kianna Hamilton-Fisher that cut the lead to five at 35-30.
Arizona responded with a 9-0 run of their own, however, and by the end of the quarter the Wildcats had taken a 19-point lead, led by McDonald who had 12 of her 17 points in the third.
Long Beach State had 23 points off the bench Sunday, led by Hardy's 15 along with eight from Bordonaro.
Long Beach State will play on the road next Friday at Loyola Marymount before hosting Grand Canyon on Sunday, December 16 at 4 p.m.
