LOS ANGELES – Shanaijah Davison and Justina King both finished with 19 points, leading a Long Beach State effort that saw the Beach challenge Loyola Marymount on the road, but the Lions came away with a 71-62 victory on the road Friday night.
Long Beach State (1-10) fell into an early hole after a 7-0 start from Loyola Marymount (7-2), but battled throughout, forcing the Lions into 22 turnovers and making 10 steals to help offset a big edge for LMU inside. The Lions finished with a rebounding edge of 44 to 23, and scored 44 points in the paint, led by 23 points from Jasmine Jones to account for the victory.
Despite the slow start, Long Beach State battled back to cut the lead to three for the first time at 11-14 on a drive to the basket from King, and the Beach would continue to hang tough with the Lions. Trailing by eight in the second quarter, the Beach responded with a 7-2 run capped by a three from Jasmine Hardy to cut the lead to 28-25, but the Lions closed the quarter with a 13-5 run of their own to lead by 11 at halftime.
The Lions would push the lead to as many as 15 in the third quarter, but the Beach fought back, closing the third on a 9-0 run to fight their way right back into the contest. A steady dose of Jones and Gabby Green, who both finished with double-doubles helped the Lions hold off Long Beach State the rest of the way.
King finished with six assists and went 10-for-12 from the line to help her finish with 19, while Davison had three steals along with her scoring total. Junior Aaryon Green led the Beach off of bench with five rebounds, scoring four points.
