Senior Bryan Alberts had a season-high 18 points for the Beach and Temidayo Yussuf added 17 points and six rebounds but it wasn’t enough for Long Beach State in Fresno.
FRESNO, Calif. -- Senior Bryan Alberts scored a season-high 18 points but Long Beach State (3-8) suffered a 92-71 defeat against Fresno State (7-2) on Saturday evening at Save Mart Center. Long Beach State hung in the game for most of the opening half, leading for over eight of the first 20 minutes, but a 10-2 Bulldogs run to close the opening stanza shifted the game to Fresno State's favor.
Alberts was 4/7 from long range to fuel his 18-point performance. Seniors Temidayo Yussuf and Deishuan Booker were also in double-figures on Saturday as Yussuf scored 17 to go with six rebounds and Booker had 13 to go with three assists and a pair of steals. Jordan Roberts played some solid minutes off the bench, adding seven points while tying for the team lead with six rebounds.
The Beach got off to a solid start, scoring nine straight points to take a 13-7 lead for the team's biggest advantage of the night less than eight minutes into the game. The Bulldogs immediately answered with a 7-0 run to regain the lead, however, and would roll the momentum into a 42-32 halftime lead, closing the first half on a buzzer-beating three from New Williams to take the double-digit lead.
The Bulldogs raced out of halftime to take a 55-36 lead three minutes into the second half, and held off the Beach from there. An Alberts three with 9:22 to play brought Long Beach State within 13 at 68-55, but that's as close as the Beach would get in the second half.
Long Beach State will have a quick turnaround and face Pacific on Monday night at 7 p.m. in Stockton, Calif. to finish off a brief two-game road trip.
