Long Beach State got off to a terrific start, shooting 60.9 percent in the first half to take a 38-30 lead into the locker room and led by as many as 15 in the second half at Pacific, but ultimately came up short in a 74-68 loss to the Tigers.
STOCKTON, Calif. -- A hot-shooting first half proved unsustainable for Long Beach State (3-9) as the Beach went cold down the stretch in a 74-68 loss to Pacific (8-4) on Monday night at Alex G. Spanos Center. Long Beach State shot 60.9 percent in the opening half but couldn't find similar success after intermission, shooting just 28.0 percent after the break.
Temidayo Yussuf again found himself in double-figures as he carried the Beach offense in the second half. The senior center scored 12 of his 14 points after halftime and added 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Yussuf has now scored in double-digits in seven of his last eight contests. The shooters were hot early on Bryan Alberts hit his first five shots (including three triples) to score 13 points. Jordan Griffin hit three straight 3-pointers in the opening half to help spark Long Beach State, but didn't attempt a shot in the second half and finished with 10 points.
Long Beach State scored most of its second-half points at the free-throw line, going 13/17 at the charity stripe in the second half. Yussuf was 6/7 from the line, all coming in the final 20 minutes, and Deishuan Booker was 8-10 on the night.
Nine different players scored in the first half for Long Beach State, with leading scorer Booker being the final player to hit the scoresheet. LBSU was 6/10 from deep in the opening 20 minutes, and carried that over to a great start in the second half as well. The Beach opened the second stanza on an 11-4 run to take its largest lead of the night, going up 49-34 with 15:59 to play.
Pacific quickly cut the lead to two thanks to a 13-0 run over the next 3:13, making it 49-47 Long Beach State. Pacific's Lafayette Dorsey at one point scored 14 straight points for the Tigers on his way to a game-high 31 points. The Tigers were even better than the Beach at the charity stripe and it helped them secure the win down the stretch. Pacific was 19/20 at the free throw line in the game, going 13/14 in the second half.
Long Beach State falls to 0-7 on the road this season, but can look forward to a pair of home games after getting some rest. The Beach will get nine days off before returning to the Walter Pyramid floor on Thursday, Dec. 20 for a 7 p.m. game against Pepperdine.
