Long Beach State Comes Up Just Short Against San Diego

12/6/2018 9:47:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Four players finished in double-figures in the loss for Long Beach State.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State featured improved defense and balanced scoring on Thursday night against San Diego, but came up just short against the Toreros after missing a chance to tie the game in the final 15 seconds in a 60-56 loss.

Long Beach State (1-8) held San Diego (5-3) to 60 points while forcing the Toreros into 19 turnovers, but were unable to convert the defensive effort into points, scoring just eight off of turnovers as the team as a whole was cold, shooting just 32.1 percent from the field.

The Beach was better from beyond the arc, hitting 5-of-13 on the night, helping keep LBSU in the game at crucial times. The first of three triples from Naomi Hunt on the evening came in the first quarter, cutting the USD lead to one at 8-7, and Long Beach State finished the quarter on a 4-0 run to keep the USD lead at four points.

A three at the end of the half from Shanaijah Davison set the score at 25-23 at halftime, and a three to open the third quarter from Hunt put the Beach on top at 26-25.

In the fourth, Long Beach State would cut the lead to one at 44-43, but the Toreros answered with a 9-2 run to open up an eight-point advantage at 55-47.

The Beach bounced back through, making a 5-0 run in the final two minutes to cut the lead to three, and pulled within two at 58-56 with 20 seconds remaining on a pair of Kianna Hamilton-Fisher free throws.

Myah Pace missed a pair of free throws, giving Long Beach State a chance at tying or taking the lead in the closing seconds, but a good look from Davison on the baseline didn't fall. The loose ball on the rebound went to San Diego on alternating possession, and San Diego was able to hold onto the lead.

For the first time in 2018-19, the Beach had four players in double-figures, with Hunt, Hamilton-Fisher, Davison and Justina King all reaching the threshold, while freshman Lauren Green again led the Beach with six rebounds.

Long Beach State remains at home for their next game, hosting Arizona at 1 p.m. on Sunday, December 9 in the Walter Pyramid.
