LONG BEACH, Calif. – Sophomore Shanaijah Davison scored 25 points and grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds in her first career double-double, leading Long Beach State to a 70-63 win over Idaho in the final game of the Beach Classic.
Freshman Justina King added 19 as the starting guard duo for the Beach proved to be trouble all night long for the Vandals. Long Beach State (1-5) also got a big effort on the glass from freshman Lauren Green, who shared the team lead with 12 rebounds on the night as the Beach nabbed a season-high 43 rebounds.
Idaho (2-3) kept things close through the first quarter, but Long Beach State was able to open up a four-point lead after ten minutes as Davison wasted no time in getting going, scoring nine points in the first. Long Beach State continued to put the pressure on, increasing their lead to 13 points and taking a 40-30 lead into halftime, really turning defense into offense on the night with 12 fast-break points.
The Vandals would chip away at the lead in the third. Mikayla Ferenz scored nine of her game-high 31 points in the quarter. Down seven at 62-55 in the fourth quarter, Idaho would go on an 8-0 run that gave the Vandals their first lead since the first quarter at 63-62 with 3:33 to play.
Davison would answer with a jumper, and a slick move from King with the shot clock expiring pushed the lead back up to three, as Long Beach State locked down Idaho for the remainder of the contest on the way to the 70-63 win, snapping LBSU's five-game losing streak.
Boise State defeated Northern Iowa in a thriller, 61-60, to claim the 2018 Beach Classic title. Davison was named to the All-Tournament team, joining Idaho's Ferenz, Northern Iowa's Karli Rucker, Boise State's Jayde Christopher and classic MVP Riley Lupfer of the Broncos.
